Definition of Speech Therapy
Speech Therapy focuses on receptive language, or the ability to understand words spoken to
you, and expressive language, or the ability to use words to express yourself. It also deals with the mechanics of producing
words, such as articulation, pitch, fluency, and volume. Adults may need speech therapy after a stroke or traumatic accident
that changes their ability to use language; for children, it generally involves pursuing milestones that have been delayed. Some
children only need help with language, others have the most problems with the mechanics of speech, and some need every kind
of speech help there is. The professional in charge of your child's speech therapy -- called a speech-language pathologist,
speech therapist, speech teacher, or whatever combination of these words your school district pastes together -- will work
to find fun activities to strengthen your child in areas of weakness. For mechanics, this might involve exercises to
strengthen the tongue and lips, such as blowing on whistles or licking up Cheerios. For language, this might involve
games to stimulate word retrieval, comprehension or conversation.

Janith Frances Sola, SLPA
Janith is originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she earned her BS in Speech-Language Pathology
at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus. As a child she had suffered from severe scoliosis and came to Springfield
Massachusetts to undergo a battery of surgeries at age 13 and 17. She spent a lot of time in the hospital and came to love
the United States. In 2004 she officially moved to the US with her husband and son in order to start a new life.
The Shriners sponsored her medical care, and in order to give back, Janith began to volunteer at the
Veteran’s Hospital in Puerto Rico. For this reason she chose a career in health care to work specifically with children
with disabilities. "I have gratitude for those health professionals that were there for me in my rehabilitation processes
and when I do a little for all the kids I touch I’m not even close to pay back."
She has extensive experience with Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Deaf and/or Hard of
Hearing, Auditory Processing Disorders, Articulation, Language Disorders, and Selective Mutism, among others.
As an interesting side note, she has done several commercials in Puerto Rico and appeared in the movie
"Los Dias De Doris," in which she had a non-speaking part as a secretary. She got involved in the modeling/movie industry
in part because of her son being chosen as a child model.
